History and Background
In 1969, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. was incorporated and began the full-time physician staffing of the Bronson Methodist Hospital Emergency Department (a Level 1 Trauma Center with current visits of 80,000 annually). Staffing of this facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan has continued uninterrupted for 40 years.
Since inception, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. has also contracted with several additional hospitals emergency departments in the area to provide part-time and full-time coverage. Our corporate goal is to furnish the highest quality care to the hospitals and patients we serve, as well as, maintain a superior working environment for the clinical providers we employ.

Staffing emergency departments is not the only role we have filled in southwest Michigan during the last 40 years.
Since the mid 1970's, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services P.C., through the Bronson Trauma and Emergency Center, has helped develop and support the Kalamazoo County EMS System, culminating in the development of the Kalamazoo County Advanced Life Support Corporation, which is responsible for overseeing the ALS system for Kalamazoo County. In addition, two of our partners serve as Medical Director for Allegan County and Van Buren County EMS Systems respectively
During the 1980s, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. contracted to provide the 24-hour physician staffing for CareFlite, Inc., a medical helicopter service. This service enabled physicians throughout southwest Michigan to function as flight physicians for a high-quality critical care helicopter service, as well as, from time-to-time, interact as members of the affiliate staff at Bronson's Trauma and Emergency Center. This service has since evolved into West Michigan AirCare (a joint hospital project).
In 1984, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. began providing physician services for the Bronson Methodist Hospital Employee Health Service. This eventually expanded and became the Bronson Methodist Hospital Occupational Medicine Service (ProHealth), which offers services to Kalamazoo businesses and industries with elective follow-up care, as well as, acute care in the Trauma and Emergency Center. Today, this service is staffed by Occupational Health Providers and Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. physicians and we continue to provide medical direction and acute care through the Bronson Trauma and Emergency Center and other participating emergency departments. Over 400 area businesses are currently served and under contract. Up to 1000 local businesses take advantage of this service on an “as needed” basis.
For each of the above services, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. has furnished both developmental expertise, direction, and ultimately a Medical Director. We are currently embarking on a variety of other diversified activities that will keep the providers and the hospitals they are affiliated with on the cutting edge of medical issues in the years to come.
In July of 1993, an Emergency Medicine Residency was started under the direction of Michigan State University Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies (MSU/KCMS) at both Bronson and Borgess Hospitals. This endeavor has opened up other avenues for Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. in emergency medicine resident teaching, as well as, offering the opportunity to be involved in research projects in cooperation with the residents. All of our boarded physicians are part of the clinical teaching within the emergency department and we currently provide four emergency medicine program faculty members. Its Director of CME is also an SWMES physician.
In October 2005 Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. re-established the responsibility for oversight of the Bronson Hospital CDU (Clinical Decision Unit) which Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. had originated in the early 1990’s.
Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. offers an array of these and other activities, association benefits, and other opportunities, which we think, are ideal for the provider who may be interested in a variety of medical activities and a secure medical and financial future.
In 2005, the first use of midlevel providers was initiated with 12 hours of daily coverage within our organization. This has increased to 44 hours to date.
In 2009, as we celebrate 40 years of continuous service, we renew our commitment to southwestern Michigan and the hospitals and patients we are privileged to serve. |
