History and Background
In January 1969, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. began the full-time physician staffing of Bronson Methodist Hospital's (a 348-bed regional tertiary care hospital and Level I Trauma Center with nearly 80,000 annual Trauma and Emergency Center patient visits in 2004) Emergency Department. Shortly thereafter, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. also contracted with other hospital emergency departments in the area to provide either full or part-time coverage. Over the years, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. has maintained the goals of providing quality patient care to the hospitals and patients it serves, as well as a positive physician working environment.
In the 1980's, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. embarked upon expansion and diversification of its activities in the face of a changing medical care environment. We added an outlying emergency department, Allegan General Hospital, and patient visits increased from 6,000 to approximately 13,000 (2002). In 1985, in cooperation with Bronson Methodist Hospital, we opened a fast track component in the Emergency Department called ExpressCare. This met with almost immediate success, offering reasonably priced, high quality, and efficient care for minor emergencies.
In 1990, we assumed coverage of LakeView Community Hospital in Paw Paw, Michigan (now Bronson LakeView Hospital), currently seeing approximately 15,000 visits per year.
In 1985, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. contracted to provide 24-hour physician staffing for CareFlite, Inc., a medical helicopter service. This service enabled physicians throughout southwest Michigan to function as flight physicians for a high-quality critical care helicopter service, as well as, from time to time, interact as members of the affiliate staff at Bronson's Trauma and Emergency Center. This service has since evolved into West Michigan Aircare (a joint hospital project).
In 1986, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. began providing physician services for the Bronson Methodist Hospital Employee Health Service. This service was responsible for providing health care for Bronson Methodist Hospital employees. In 1987, the service was expanded to include the Bronson Methodist Hospital Occupational Medicine Service, which offers services to Kalamazoo businesses and industries with elective follow-up care, as well as, acute care in the Trauma and Emergency Center. Currently, that service is staffed by Occupational Health Physicians and Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. and continues to provide medical direction and acute care through the Bronson Trauma and Emergency Center and other participating emergency departments. Today, over 300 area businesses are contracted for this service.
Also, since the mid 1970's, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services P.C., through Bronson Trauma and Emergency Center, has helped develop and support the Kalamazoo County EMS System culminating in the development of the Kalamazoo County Advanced Life Support Corporation, which is responsible for overseeing the ALS system for Kalamazoo County.
For each of the above services, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. has furnished both developmental expertise, direction, and ultimately a Medical Director. We are currently embarking and interacting with a variety of other diversified activities that will keep the physicians and the hospitals they are affiliated with on the cutting edge of medical issues in the years to come.
In 1993, Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. became involved in the teaching of emergency medicine residents, in addition to residents rotating through the emergency department from other services. In July of 1993, an Emergency Medicine Residency was started under the direction of MSU/KCMS at both Bronson and Borgess Hospitals. This endeavor has opened up other avenues for Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. in emergency medicine resident teaching, as well as, offering the opportunity to be involved in research projects in cooperation with the residents.
Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. offers an array of these and other activities, association benefits, and other opportunities, which we think, are ideal for the physician who may be interested in a variety of medical activities and a secure medical and financial future.
In 2004 we celebrated 35 years since our formation in addition to 35 years of continuous service to Bronson Methodist Hospital and our patients.
In October 2005 Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. re-established the responsibility for oversight of the Bronson Hospital CDU (Clinical Decision Unit) which Southwestern Michigan Emergency Services, P.C. had originated in the early 1990’s. The first use of midlevel providers was initiated with 12 hours of daily coverage which has been increased to 28 hours to date.
